The International Labour Organization (ILO) celebrates World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28 to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases worldwide. April 28 is also the date chosen by the global trade union movement to pay tribute to the victims of occupational accidents and diseases.
The ILO aims to raise global awareness of the magnitude and consequences of work-related accidents, injuries, and diseases, placing workers’ health and safety at the top of international agendas and supporting action at all levels.
Since its founding, the ILO has adopted more than 40 international labor standards specifically addressing occupational safety and health (OSH), providing minimum standards for controlling and managing work-related risks and protecting workers in a wide range of occupations and work situations.
Safe Day 2025 Theme
World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2025 will explore the theme: Revolutionizing health and safety: the role of AI and digitalization at work.
The campaign will shed light on how new technologies are transforming OSH, including through task automation, the use of smart OSH tools and monitoring systems, augmented and virtual reality, and algorithmic work management.
The digital transformation of work has led to evolving work arrangements, such as teleworking and digital labor platforms, which will be further examined.
The ILO will publish a new report and promotional materials analyzing these critical issues, assessing how digital transformation can improve workplace safety and health, and highlighting the responses of governments, employers, workers, and other stakeholders to mitigate potential safety and health risks.
