October 25. St. Crispin’s Day

Today October 25, the feast of Shoe Manufacturers Day in commemoration of Christian Saints Crispin and Crispinian, brothers and patron saints of cobblers held and shoemakers.

HISTORY OF THE ST. CRISPIN’S DAY

Legend has it that St. Crispin and St. Crispian were members of a noble family in Rome who were sent to evangelize the Gauls, to avoid detection, by day they were dedicated to evangelize and during the evening they exercised as cobblers to pay for their lives.

They suffered persecution, threats and promises by the emperor Maximian, who sought to persuade their faith, however, they were not terrified because Christ was present. When Maximian saw that his efforts were in vain.  He made the governor Rictius Varus cruel persecutor of Christians responsible to catch them, when caught, their tongues were cut, their tools were nailed under their toes and a stone was secured on their necks to be thrown down a  river, but they were able to swim to the opposite side of the river. Later both were beheaded on October 25 of 285.

A priest of the time urged shoemakers to follow their example, not to retreat in times of difficulty, to overcome the tests and overcome obstacles, since then October 25 commemorates the Shoe Manufacturers’ Day.
